ROLLING STOCK - GENERAL FREIGHT

Note: Freight car rolling stock is identified through a five or six digit numbering sequence to indicate type of car, length, and class of equipment or loading.

• 1st digit indicates the type of car.
  1 = box car; 2 = refrigerator; 3 = tank; 4 - hopper; 5 = flat; 6 = gondola; 7 = stock; 8 = log bunk; 9 = special
• 2nd digit indicates the car length to the nearest 10 foot increment.
  2 = 20-29 feet; 3 = 30-39 feet; 4 = 40-49 feet; etc.
• 3rd digit indicates the specific loading or equipment designs unique to some cars.
• 4th digit indicates a series number only.
• 5th and 6th digits indicate the sequence within a defined series.

BOXCARS 3rd digit indicators:
0 = General loading
1 = general loading
2 = OF/cushion underframe
3 = Cushion underframe
4 = Dry bulk foods
5 = Hazardous loading
6 = Auto parts
7 = Insulated

This equipment is identified with a four digit numbering system. The first digit indicates the basic type of car or equipment
1 = Box cars, tool and equipment cars
2 = Flatcar
3 = Gondola
4 = Hopper
5 = Tank car
6 = Bunk/crew car
7 = Kitchen
8 = Derricks, cranes, tenders, shovels, etc...
9 = Plows, flangers, spreaders, etc...
