Literacy and Academic Success Team
Making a difference that will LAST!
Strong reading skills are essential to a student's success in virtually all areas of
learning. Yet statewide tests, just a few years ago, showed that 46% of Washington's
fourth graders tested did not meet state standards for reading. Members generally
work with small groups of students at a local elementary school.
Your goal: Help students become enthusiastic and successful readers.Building on the overwhelming success of the reading projects over the previous
three years, RSC decided to be the first in the state (and perhaps country) to pilot
a Math Corps program in September 2000. Components include in-class and small
group tutoring, Family Math Nights and more!Look into most any math textbook and you'll see an emphasis on concepts like main
idea, research, and vocabulary building. You'll work with students so they get the help
they need with math facts and computation applications geared toward improving their
ability to problem-solve.In 2005-06, we decided to blend the Math Tutor and Reading Tutor positions into a
single role. This provides much needed support for students and schools and recognizes
the powerful role that reading plays in math. Our members report that the combined
Literacy Tutor assignment provides a richer service experience.Phoenix High School
Project-based Learning Opportunities
Mission: "A personalized and flexible learning structure motivates students to direct
their own education, initiating projects and meeting learning standards in ways that
are unique to their own interests and abilities. Students are challenged to learn to use
their minds well, to reflect, to dream, to plan, and to transform their goals into realities
through authentic, rigorous, and excellent work."As a Community Outreach Liaison, you'll have the opportunity to support the positive
relationships among students, staff, parents, and community mentors that create
a solid foundation for learning experiences that are relevant to the real world.
These experiences ensure that students are college-ready, workplace-ready, community-
ready, and that they have the desire and the means to make sure that learning never ends.Vista Youth Center

Attendance and attachment lead to achievement in school
Each year, more than 800 truancy petitions are filed by schools in Benton and Franklin
counties. Truancy is a significant issue in our community and is a gateway behavior that
can lead to criminal behavior, substance abuse, teen pregnancy and poverty. You can
help by working directly with students, their families and schools to increase attendance,
attachment and achievement in school.Volunteer Development
Getting the community involved!
In partnership with the Mid-Columbia Library System, this position supports exciting activities
and volunteer programs designed to get the whole community connected to the wonderful resources
our libraries have to offer. In 2005, RSC developed Project Literacy, a reading tutor program for our local elementary schools.
The goal is to bring volunteers into the schools to assist emergent readers. In partnership with Pasco
Schools, you will provide leadership to this important volunteer engagement effort.Emergency Preparedness
Is everyone ready?
Building strong communities means helping citizens to be prepared. Join us as we support governmental
and faith-based organizations in their efforts to organize, train and prepare people for disasters or emergencies.
RSC members come to understand the importance of services and activities conducted by emergency services
providers and then function in an essential role in testing emergency plans and procedures in realistic
environments during one to three emergency drills conducted annually.
