SPECIAL PROJECTS

Each year, RSC partners with various community organizations
to promote public safety, literacy and address other human needs.

- Safe Kids Saturday
Sponsored by the Safe Kids Coalition, this event is held in May. Organizations promoting the safety of youth provide informative/interactive booths for the community. Safety issues covered include E.D.I.T.H (Exit Drills in The Home), Water Safety, Bike and multi-sport helmet use, proper car seat safety checks. Members assist with everything from event set-up and take down to helmet and seat fittings.

- "I Love to Read" Poster contest (Spring Break)
In this annual project, one finalist is picked from each of four local libraries to have their poster displayed for everyone to see! All other artwork is donated to cheer the hearts of senior citizens when they are delivered to local assisted-living and retirement facilities. The GRAND PRIZE winner receives a BRAND NEW BIKE (courtesy of the Chinook Bicycle Club and Scott's Cycle & Sports) and helmet (courtesy of Safe Kids Coalition)! Three runners-up receive a gift certificates for a bundle of books!

- Warm Up with Books and Go Wild for Reading (Winter and Summer breaks)
These annual projects use stories, crafts, games, songs, and take-home activities to encourage kids to keep on reading even when school's not in session. Designed and led by AmeriCorps members, these enrichment activities always rock!

- Special Olympics (October, February and May)
Members assist with regional Basketball, Bowling and Softball Tournaments as well as the Eastern Washington Spring Track and Field Meet. RSC-AmeriCorps members enjoy this partnership because they can see what true team spirit is through the eyes of the athletes.

Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration
Each January, RSC-AmeriCorps and community members come together at Columbia Basin College to keep the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. alive. Join us, and hundreds of community members, at the Martin Luther King Jr. statue on campus to open the ceremony with a one-minute bell ringing at noon, followed by opportunities for children to create Diversity Crafts.

DID YOU KNOW Columbia Basin College is the ONLY college in
Washington state with a statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?

National Volunteer Week
Held during the third week of April, National Volunteer Week is a time for members to recognize the many volunteers that help make their site successful.
Whether it is a luncheon or an ice cream party, Service Site Volunteers are shown how much they are needed and appreciated.
